Nehru World School in collaboration with Cambridge University Press organised the ‘Festival of Expressions’. Students from across the world were encouraged to see Mathematics and its relevance around them and prepare a 3 minutes video. The event ‘Math Around Me’ started on 25th January 2021 and culminated on 10th March 2021.
โ
The students aged 13 to 15 years explored the Math connections around them, preparing how and where do they see math. They expressed their thoughts and videos by sharing them on social media platforms. A total of 559 entries were received from across India and around the world, with 34 excited winners receiving laptops, kindle, smartphones, smart speakers and headphones.
Dr. Arunabh Singh, Director-Principal NWS stated that “Math around me aims to develop reflection and critical thinking amongst students using Mathematics as a drawing board. It also provides them a platform to showcase their observations with a vision of making conversations around Math ‘cool’ for young learners.”
To provide better insights into this learning journey, Professor R. Ramanujam from The Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai was invited as a guest speaker to answer the questions posed by our panel students in an event ‘Talking Diaries’ which was telecasted live on social media too.
โ
Susan Holmes, Head Teacher NWS added that it was a very successful first event of its kind for NWS as well as a great opportunity for our students to find expression for their perceptions of the world around us, their imagination, thinking and creativity.
โ
We congratulate all the winners and hope to engage students in the future in discussions where they can express their thoughts and make real-life connections.
